Disaster Preparedness in New York

Though many people feel helpless when a natural disaster is headed their way, there is a lot that can be done to prepare and make sure their home and their family are as safe as possible. Of course, as New York is preparing for its fifth noreaster this year, it may seem frustrating to have to prepare for bad weather once again. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has recently issued a press release regarding how important it is to have a kit ready for weather-related emergencies that may happen.

The recommended emergency supply kit should have enough food, water, clothing, all medications, and other necessities for each member of the family that will last for at least 72 hours. These items should be kept in sealed plastic bags and stored in an easily accessible place in a house or can stay in a vehicle. It is also important to make sure the food is nonperishable and does not require electricity to cook, simply due to the fact that in many cases such as noreasters, households lose power for several days, as was seen in much of New York during the last storms.
