After a fire damages my home, what should I do?
One of the most devastating things that can happen to a homeowner or a renter is if a fire takes place and damages their home. Not only will there likely be structural issues, there is probably also going to be significant damage to personal property as well. After the fire has been put out and the fire marshall says that the premise is safe to enter, it is important to carefully take pictures or videos of the damage. If possible, it may be a good idea to try and make an inventory of damaged property and damaged personal goods to give to the insurance company. The insurance company will send a representative out to try and determine the value of the damage but it is also a good idea to retain the services of a public adjuster who can come out and give an unbiased opinion on the value of the damage. This is important because unfortunately, sometimes the insurance company will tell a homeowner that the value is worth less than it truly is because of course, they are going to try and save themselves some money. A public adjuster can tell the true value of the damage.
